Father’s Day is quickly approaching. The day provides an opportunity to observe, praise, and acknowledge the person who represented the role of dad in our lives. Whether that person was physically present, emotionally available or not, or a sports hero frequently watched in the media, they influenced our beliefs about manhood, masculinity, and male caretaking.
Window displays and advertisements regularly remind us that Father’s Day is intended to be a holiday filled with traditional festive family brunch, BBQs, and gatherings.
The third Sunday of June, not all are fortunate to have the opportunity for joyous gatherings. Grievers are bequeathed to reflect how this Father’s Day will commensurate. Whether the influential person died, moved far away, or is emotionally cut-off, the reality is the distance brings many emotions to the forefront.
While we cannot prevent Father’s Day from occurring, we have a choice as to how we will spend the day. Consider balancing time with others and alone; this can make the day more endurable. It can be soothing to write in a journal how the father figure made positive and negative influences. Purchase a card and express your love, hurt, sorrow, or whatever comes to mind. Creative expression in a poem, painting, drawing, or dance is another way to express your sentiments. Then decide if you want to give your meaningful gift to someone you admire, cherish it as a reminder of your day, or trash your item. You have free will to manifest your day whether it is something traditional or a new ritual.
